SHAH ALAM, May 25 – UMW Toyota Motor today held a launching ceremony of the 11th Toyota Eco Youth (TEY) programme. This year’s programme will have a new challenge that takes the TEY beyond the school boundaries to involve the community surrounding the schools.
The 11th TEY programme was officially launched by Tuan Hj. Muhamat Roli Bin Hj. Hassan, Director of Co-Curriculum and Arts Department, Ministry of Education, Mr. Takashi Hibi, Deputy Chairman of UMW Toyota Motor and En. Ismet Suki, President, UMW Toyota Motor.
Environment conservation and efforts towards greening the earth has always been close to UMW Toyota Motor. The TEY programme was first conceptualized in 2001 and since its inception, UMW Toyota Motor has been able to inculcate a sense of conscience towards the environment amongst school students.
Through the years, TEY programme has received good response with support by the Ministry of Education. In total, there were 138 schools involved, comprise of over 1,500 students, principals and teachers. Since the inception of TEY, UMW Toyota Motor has spent over RM 4 million to organize and run this programme.
Commenting about the enhanced TEY programme, En. Ismet Suki, President of UMW Toyota Motor said, "We are very delighted that TEY programme is able to sustain for more than 10 years. With support from the Ministry of Education, this year, we would like to enhance TEY to involve the community around the schools in order to create more awareness on environment conservation."
This year's TEY programme is also supported by a non-Profit NGO, the Global Environment Centre (GEC) to provide knowledge and assist the schools to initiate their environment project with the community.
Prior to the 11th TEY programme launching ceremony, a total of 88 secondary students, principals and teachers from eight schools were gathered at Lembah Kiara to go through a series of environmental auditing conducted by GEC. Among the activities are identifying the sources of pollution in the drains, issues surrounding the wet market as well as river monitoring around the area.
The Ministry of Education has selected eight schools to participate in this 11th TEY programme. They are SMKA Maahad Hamidiah, Selangor; SMK Ayer Keroh, Melaka; SMK Bukit Jambul, Pulau Pinang; SMK Pendang, Kedah; SMK Tanjung Datuk, Johor; SMK Chalok, Terengganu; SMK Takis, Sabah and SMK Lundu, Sarawak.
"The TEY will conclude with a convention and prize-giving ceremony, which will be held at the end of this year. Upon the success of this new TEY programme, we will explore the possibility of having more schools participation throughout the country to compete in this event next year," concluded En. Ismet.
The winner of TEY will receive a cash prize of RM 7,000, while the second and third winners will each receive RM 5,000 and RM 3,000, respectively.
Toyota Eco Youth is part of the Environment pillar of UMW Toyota Motor's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. The company has other two CSR pillars which are Road Safety and Philanthropy.
