News: MSS returns with a bang with debut of Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli

29 SEPTEMBER 2011, BY SEPANG INTERNATIONAL CIRCUIT
THE Malaysian Super Series (MSS) returns this weekend with a bang as the popular and successful one-make series - Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli - makes its debut at the Sepang International Circuit.

Sepang will be the fourth stop over after two races in Shanghai and Zhuhai and promises a whole level of excitement than before with 458 Challenge lining up the grid, specially engineered for racing with Formula One traction control system.

Developed in-house by Ferrari, the F1-Trac system constantly monitors levels of grip for maximum high-performance road-holding and is the same technology used by competing cars during F1.

The series is now in its nineteenth year and, in addition to the usual three series – Italy, Europe and North America – for this year, there is another for those owners based in the Asia Pacific region, who will contest a five-race series.

Racers from China, Japan, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Taiwan and South Korea will converge in Sepang in hopes of winning the last race of the series in Asia.

Over twenty competitors at the wheel of the 458 Challenge will run in two separate classifications of Trofeo Pirelli and Coppa Shell.

“This is the first time we are racing in Sepang. We came here because the Sepang track is one of the best in Asia and we want to provide only the best to our drivers,” said Head of Corse Clienti Ferrari Asia Region, Andrea Reggiani when met at the pits.

“Among the interesting features of the Ferrari Challenge is the cars which are designed specifically for racing, incorporating a technology from Ferrari Experience in F1,” added Reggiani.

Meanwhile, the third round for bikes will act as a dress rehearsal for the upcoming Malaysian MotoGP support race weekend on the 21-23 October.

All the riders will get their chance to share the limelight on MotoGP race weekend as they take to the stage a few hours before their heroes, Casey Stoner, Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi do battle in the premier class of the MotoGP.

But before that, there is still some unfinished business to attend to as reigning Supersports champion, Mohd Zamri Baba continues his rivalry with Ahmad Fuad Baharuddin.

Zamri, on a Yamaha R6 has left all his rivals trailing in his wake with Ahmad Fuad giving a good fight on his Kawasaki ZX6R but still not enough to close the gap with last year’s Moto2 wildcard with Zamri now holding a commanding lead after 2 rounds.

In the Superbike category, Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman who is in the running for a wildcard spot in Moto2 alongside Zamri and Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah will somehow find a way to shake off the   bridesmaid tag as he finds himself up against nemesis, Glenn Allerton from Australia.

In the GT class for cars, the absence of Sri Lankan speed demon, Dilantha Malaguwa who is in Japan for the Asian GT will be capitalized by defending champion, Mok Weng Sun from Singapore in hopes of closing the gap on his closest rival and runaway leader this year.

Fans are invited to come and watch the inaugural Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli and other exciting events this Saturday with the qualifying sessions scheduled at 1.40 pm onwards while the program for race day begins 8.45 am Sunday.
